How to calculate work hours

Find the time between your start and end times, then subtract any unpaid breaks. This working hours calculator counts elapsed clock time to the minute, including a shift that ends after midnight.

Work time = end time − start time − unpaid breaks

How breaks are deducted

Enter the combined length of breaks you want to exclude, in whole minutes. Two 15-minute breaks add up to 30 minutes. Enter 0 if no time should be deducted. Include paid breaks in work time by leaving them out of the break field. Break time cannot exceed the shift.

How decimal hours work

Decimal hours express the same time as a number: whole hours plus minutes divided by 60. For example, 8 hr 15 min is 8.25 hours. Minutes are divided by 60, not 100. Use the Decimal Hours Calculator for either direction of conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate an overnight shift?

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, it is treated as the following day. The overnight example above shows the calculated result. Check AM and PM before calculating.

What happens if the start and end times match?

They count as zero elapsed time, not 24 hours. This tool supports individual shifts shorter than 24 hours. It does not use dates or adjust for daylight saving time changes.

How is estimated gross pay calculated?

Unrounded work minutes are divided by 60 and multiplied by your hourly rate. The final dollar amount is rounded to the nearest cent. This is a straight-time estimate; it does not apply overtime rules, taxes, deductions, or other payroll adjustments.

Can I add several shifts or a whole week?
